Class Overview

Monday's inaugural class of AI Thought Leader School was everything I hoped it would be.

For those who weren’t there, we dove right into the two fundamental pillars that form the foundation for the entire year:

  1. The 6-Figure Prompt Newsletter Opportunity

  2. The 6-Figure Prompt Newsletter Blueprint

Until you really understand the opportunity, you won’t be inspired enough to take the necessary action now to capture it.

While I personally love thought leadership and think it's amazing, it can be much harder for people who are new to break through in today’s content-saturated world. But right now, there's a time-sensitive opportunity for aspiring thought leaders to quickly get traction.

There is a genuine opportunity to position yourself at the forefront of the most important shift in thought leadership since the rise of the Internet itself. And my goal for the class was to lay out what I’m seeing and introduce you to what I call Prompt Leadership.

Introduction and Course Overview (00:00 - 00:24)

Michael Simmons enthusiastically welcomes participants to the AI Thought Leader School, explaining that today's focus will be on the "6-figure prompt newsletter opportunity" and blueprint. He outlines the three tracks of the school: 6-Figure Prompt Newsletter (Mondays), AI Blockbuster (Wednesdays), and Human Super Intelligence (Fridays). Michael emphasizes that the program accommodates people at different starting points, whether they're subject matter experts, AI-experienced, or have existing clients. He describes his vision of thought leadership as "getting paid to learn" while spending most of the day in flow, following curiosity, contrasting this with other business models that don't allow such freedom.

The Idea Maze Framework (00:24 - 00:52)

Michael introduces the concept of the "idea maze," sharing a video featuring Mark Andreessen, founder of Netscape and prominent venture capitalist. The idea maze represents the process of navigating through countless possibilities, questions, and scenarios when developing a business or product. Andreessen explains that great entrepreneurs work through this maze before even starting, anticipating problems and finding solutions. Participants share their own experiences with the idea maze, highlighting how they've sometimes gotten stuck or realized a path wasn't working after significant investment. Michael compares this to a "battleship" game where most attempts miss, but finding a true hit requires exploring many options.

Michael's Thought Leadership Journey (00:52 - 01:42)

Michael shares his personal journey through the thought leadership "idea maze," beginning with a high school business in 1998 with Cal Newport. He describes writing emails to friends about entrepreneurship, eventually writing articles and a book that sold 10,000 copies. His blog initially gained attention but fizzled out, teaching him that consistency alone doesn't guarantee results. He then moved to keynote speaking, charging increasingly more per speech and creating a college campus tour that earned $10,000 per event. After having children, Michael pivoted away from travel-heavy speaking to writing for Forbes, where he focused on quality over quantity, spending 30 hours per post. He eventually monetized his expertise through various means including courses, a mental model club, paid ads, and found significant success on Medium with articles averaging 200,000 views.

The Value of Having a Home Base (01:42 - 02:14)

Michael differentiates between distribution channels (where you get content out) and having a "home" on the internet (where you drive people). He shares how Medium initially worked well for him until algorithm changes dramatically reduced his reach, which taught him the value of owning his platform. Michael strongly recommends Substack as a home base for 99% of people, highlighting its benefits: ownership of email lists, stripe subscriptions connected to your account (unlike Patreon), free basic usage, built-in community features, easy cross-posting, integrated social features, and strong monetization focus. He explains that while no platform is perfect, Substack offers significant advantages for thought leaders just starting out.

The Prompt Newsletter Opportunity (02:14 - 03:04)

Michael introduces the concept of prompt newsletters, noting that very few creators have prompts as their primary output format. He explains why prompts are a unique opportunity: they help creators stand out in crowded social media spaces, they're assets that improve automatically as AI models get better, and people perceive them as more valuable than regular articles. Michael highlights that prompts can spread virally online differently than content because they require less user commitment - instead of reading a 15-minute article, users can simply copy an interesting prompt and get personalized results immediately. Michael demonstrates this with an example of a LinkedIn post that combined Simon Sinek's "golden circles" framework with ChatGPT, which received 1,500 engagements. He points out the vast opportunity to create the "ChatGPT version" of countless frameworks for specific niches and audiences, emphasizing that though the space will eventually become more crowded, now is an excellent time to establish yourself in this area.

Monetization Strategies for Prompt Newsletters (03:04 - 03:47)

Michael outlines a value ladder for monetizing prompts, starting with free prompts that users can copy and paste. The next level includes prompt classes that teach people how to use and customize prompts for their needs. Michael shares that rather than just sharing prompts, creators can iterate to develop high-quality prompts worth charging premium prices for. He provides an example of a copywriting mastermind group that charges $5,000 for access to highly refined copywriting prompts, bringing in over 500 members after significantly improving their core prompt. Michael explains the concept of "augmented coaching and consulting," where prompts allow creators to extend their impact beyond trading time for money. He suggests that conversations with coaching clients can provide valuable data to improve prompts, creating a virtuous cycle of value creation.

From Thought Leadership to Prompt Leadership (03:47 - 04:38)

Michael defines the shift from thought leadership to prompt leadership as moving from "turning knowledge into rare and valuable ideas distributed through words" to "turning knowledge into AI bots." He explains that thought leadership typically involves creating free content to build credibility and relationships, then monetizing through speaking, coaching, or consulting. In contrast, prompt leadership has different advantages: prompts don't compete for attention the same way content does; the space is less crowded; and there's a different viral loop where people experience immediate, personalized value. Michael argues that thought leaders are particularly well-suited to become prompt leaders because they've already developed expertise in learning, creating unique ideas, and packaging content. The research materials thought leaders collect can become valuable data for their prompts, and their experience explaining concepts to others transfers well to explaining tasks to AI.

Practical Implementation of a Prompt Newsletter (04:38 - 05:33)

Michael presents a three-pronged approach for those starting from scratch: a daily social media post with a prompt, a weekly newsletter post, and a weekly class. For daily posts, he suggests potentially taking down prompts after a period to create scarcity and drive people to the newsletter. This approach provides daily feedback, helps build a prompt library over time, and aids in distribution. Michael recommends naming unique prompts to give people a hook to remember and discuss them. He shares examples of effective formatting, like Ruben's book quote image prompt that includes a visual example of the output. Michael advises posting on Substack Notes since it's integrated with the platform, making it easier to link to your publication compared to other platforms that try to keep users on their site. He emphasizes that the process of coming up with daily prompt ideas creates a powerful skill loop, helping creators get better at developing prompt ideas over time.

Case Studies and Demonstration (05:33 - 06:50)

Michael demonstrates how to structure a newsletter with both free and paid portions, showing examples from his own work. The free portion typically includes the prompt overview and benefits, while paid subscribers get the full prompt, instructions, variations, and underlying principles. He shares a specific example from an "Augmented Awakening" class led by Anand, featuring a prompt from Harvard researcher Daniel P. Brown. Michael notes that premium tiers can include live classes focused on prompts or productized consulting based on refined prompts. He shares a case study of a newsletter that gained 143 paid subscribers from a single prompt post, emphasizing the potential impact of creating resonant content. Michael demonstrates a powerful prompt exploration exercise he conducted related to human superintelligence, showing how he discovered new ideas and perspectives by engaging with AI differently. He shares a profound experience where an AI recommendation led him to discover Alvin Lucier's experimental sound piece "I Am Sitting in a Room," highlighting how prompts can open unexpected paths of exploration that traditional social media algorithms would never surface.

Q&A Session and Deeper Insights (06:50 - 07:43)

In the final section, Michael addresses participant questions, starting with advice on getting started (create one prompt per day and share it, even just with a friend). When asked about systems for organizing prompts, he acknowledges this remains a challenge with current tools, but suggests text expander tools as a potential solution. Michael addresses skepticism about AI's evolution potentially making prompting skills irrelevant, sharing his perspective that while the future is uncertain, focusing on a process you love has inherent value regardless of outcomes. When Michael Glenn asks how prompts could help with mental health content, Michael shares the example of the "Ideal Parent" prompt that helps users experience supportive parental responses. Michael emphasizes that as participants progress through the course, they'll discover many applications they hadn't considered. The session concludes with Michael's excitement about the journey ahead and gratitude for participants' engagement.

00:11:43 Hannah Verrall: Loved that. Useful as a general Thought Leader concept, but also it's what I do for people building software so it's doubly useful for me.

00:11:50 Steve Morris: yes, bringing thought leadership as a service to my clients

00:11:51 Racer Max: Yes. I now have a word for the process. I find I get too stuck in the thinking side of the idea maze and not enough time in the experiment/product/prototype side.

00:11:53 Erich Ball: That seems to be a formal name for the search process we all go through.

00:11:54 Jonathan Hughes: I feel like I get 'stuck' in the idea maze...in the ideas and trying to figure them out...and never make it through the maze

00:11:56 Leandra: I haven’t applied this to my thought leadership but I’ve applied it to product creation

00:11:56 John Hipsley: I have seen a god product get funded and run out of money due - but the idea remains good.

00:12:05 Wendy McNeeley: Reacted to "I feel like I get 's..." with 💯

00:12:07 Clyde : It has been done intuitively … never really that structured

00:12:09 faythebuchanan: Its a really good awareness, I realize I need to go further through the maze on various projects.

00:12:13 Leandra: Reacted to "Yes. I now have a wo..." with 💯

00:12:14 Malliha : I would love to learn more about the framework. I believe I do this intuitively

00:12:16 Bonnie J.: Yes, in setting up a teaching/editing business, and in two startups that I’ve been part of

00:12:19 Janet Ridsdale: sometimes go round in loops

00:12:23 Ram Iyer (www.MiTRamiyer.com): Be careful about setting expectations. Going through the idea maze takes years - literally. I know, because I've been through it a few times. Some people here are expecting to make a six figure income in 12 months!

00:12:35 Kevin Whitcher: Time is the enemy here. I focus too much on short term stuff

00:12:35 Gordon Raup: Yes, this was the process we went through on our two software companies we built. Currently repeating for a third effort.

00:12:37 Gabriel: It’s a great way to conceptualize the whole process and make sense of it. Love it.

00:12:39 Rad Co (@radrad): I wonder what question you should be asking yourself when you navigate thru the idea maze, is this the same as working a prototype and then moving around it?

00:12:54 Rad Co (@radrad): Reacted to "I feel like I get 's..." with 💯

00:13:12 David D.: I think this idea maze concept gives a framework for succeeding at entrepreneuership. It clears up a lot about the process.

00:13:14 Leandra: Haha yessss

00:13:38 Don S: This class is one node in my present idea maze.

00:14:31 Luanna: Reacted to "This class is one ..." with 💛

00:14:43 Michael Glenn: It seems like AI can really speed this up but you’d still have to explore various avenues to find out wha really works, yeah?

00:17:45 Rad Co (@radrad): Reacted to "It seems like AI can..." with ❤️

00:18:02 Rad Co (@radrad): that’s what I was thinking, @Michael Glenn

If you have a mic plugged in the outgoing audio might default to going out of that

00:20:15 vicward: Replying to "Is everybody else he..."

Thanks

00:20:33 Leandra: Reacted to "Thanks" with 👍🏾

00:21:37 Una Doyle: Business Coach (Double Your Profits): Yeah I’ve the same feeling re. Ads and spreadsheets. Wonder how could be improved with AI now?

00:22:47 Michael Simmons: http://arelmoodie.com/

00:23:04 Michael Glenn: Sounds like you’re saying don’t do everything, just do the parts that you’re best at

00:23:22 Leandra: We can hear you

00:23:33 Steve Morris: Focus on your Unique Ability: the things you LOVE doing and are really GREAT at!

00:25:15 Leandra: That human curation changed Medium

00:29:06 Malliha : Reacted to "That human curation …" with 💯

00:30:26 Una Doyle: Business Coach (Double Your Profits): What’s your thoughts on how to balance substack and your website?

00:30:34 Leandra: Following. Makes total sense.

00:30:48 Malliha : Makes sense.

00:30:51 Una Doyle: Business Coach (Double Your Profits): Like blog content to get found and sell other things

00:30:56 Kevin Whitcher: Substack is great - all resonates

00:31:12 Clyde : Yep started looking publishing on substack so this is very good timing

00:31:16 kevin iPhone: How do you define “home” vs “distribution”.. is Substack both your home and your distribution then or are they mutually exclusive?

00:31:25 Phil Powis | Sacred Business Flow: I’m very interested in creating a prompt based newsletter and I think it will greatly compliment my existing work but I’m trying to decide if it will need to live as a new publication or bake into existing. Maybe we will get into this later but curious your thoughts on how to decision make around this

00:32:24 Una Doyle: Business Coach (Double Your Profits): Yes, I’d want my website to be my home for longevity… And for Substack to be one offer to complement existing.

00:32:44 Una Doyle: Business Coach (Double Your Profits): Is there an issue with publishing the free part of the newsletter on both substack and your website?

00:32:57 Una Doyle: Business Coach (Double Your Profits): Good to know

00:33:23 Michael Glenn: Can you explain what you mean by prompt newsletter just so we’re all on the same page

00:34:13 Leandra: It’s sooooo crowded

00:34:28 Leandra: Replying to "Can you explain what..."

It’s a newsletter focused on sharing AI prompts

00:35:52 Marlo: that is super true (people will pay for course over free content)

00:36:18 Leandra: Reacted to "that is super true (..." with 💯

00:37:56 Michael Glenn: I’m on Substack already, writing about mental health, relationships, and personal development.

I’ve recently started sharing a “self reflection prompt” at the end of each newsletter to help my reader think about/engage with the newsletter content…

Is that the kind of thing you’re talking about or am I way off in left field?

00:38:38 Una Doyle: Business Coach (Double Your Profits): Reacted to "I’m on Substack alre..." with 👍

00:38:47 Michael Glenn: Cool cool

00:39:04 Don S: What about the counter argument: Instead of “giving the audience fish, teach them to fish.” Instead of providing prompts, teach them how to prompt?

00:39:49 Mark Brown: How will we get access to this recording?

00:41:44 Vikram K: How to standout if others in the niche also start sharing prompts?

00:41:47 Malliha : Are you solely utilizing GPT to create prompts or a few models? I assume NotebookLM can help with consolidating research for the prompt … are you using a specific workflow to build/architect a prompt?

00:42:50 Phil Powis | Sacred Business Flow: Will there be any community platform for this school for us to help share ideas among students?

00:42:57 Shannon: Michael when you say bots are your referring to custom GPTs?

00:43:17 Leandra: Replying to "Michael when you say..."

yes

00:43:31 Shannon: Reacted to "yes" with 👍

00:45:56 Erich Ball: the ability to be a few steps ahead of others in the theory and development of your niche.

00:45:58 Malliha : Being a trailblazer in an industry while shaping it

00:46:00 Michael Glenn: Influence public opinion

00:46:02 Michael William Roach: Creating prompts that other people see as valuable

Create two artifacts:

1. 10 variations of the prompt to magnify its impact.

2. Multi-level, categorized bulleted list that shows how this prompt type first into a broader, more comprehensive map of all prompt types.

To establish thought leadership in your field.

01:36:19 Leandra: Replying to "What the big picture..."

If thought leadership moves to prompt leadership, there’s a small window of opportunity right now to capitalize before it gets crowded and you get to be THE or one of the go to people for prompts in your niche

01:36:36 Kevin Whitcher: I think we can become a conduit to AI use for our individual niches

01:41:02 Kevin Kurgansky iPhone: Michael, have you or anyone here ever used you.com as an aggregate tool that allows you to search thru dozens and dozens of LLM’s?

Do you see any good advantages and utilities for this over chat / Claude / etc?

I’ve only played around with it for a week or two so not sure if it has the same memory function built in as chat gpt so that’s one potential drawback but I also don’t have their paid version so I don’t know. Curious what the upsides are for this if anyone uses it in their work flow.

01:42:06 Leandra: Replying to "Michael, have you or..."

I’ve used Poe. The “problem” with you.com and Poe is that you’re using the API so you don’t get the value of memory which is important with continued use and to be able to reference previous conversations.

01:43:03 Erich Ball: Replying to "So like, deep thinke..."

Not really. I've found it's been similar to learning a new language, even though it's English. To work on a major project you wind up hitting the limits of what the system architecture allows and/or is designed for. So the questions really revolve around how to work within those limitations. You do need to be able to clearly express what you want, but you also need to learn why the AI is not giving you what you need, and then working around that.

01:45:26 Kevin Whitcher: You are the Captain Kirk of prompting Mr Simmons

01:45:29 Erich Ball: A key change for me, was seeing the AI as a team member, with limitations, and me acting as a mentor and guide. At that point, I was able to open my own mind to the strengths and weaknesses of AI, in the same way that I used to with physical team members. You start managing AI, not using it as a tool. It's a sea-change in the way you work with it.

01:45:41 Una Doyle: Business Coach (Double Your Profits): Just a thought - would it damage your LI profile/reach if you’re consistently deleting posts? 🤔

01:46:21 Mark Brown: Replying to "Just a thought - wou..."

Yes. They will ding you pretty hard if you delete your posts.

01:47:19 Racer Max: Fascinating!

01:48:39 Mark Brown: Replying to "Just a thought - wou..."

Yes, deleting LinkedIn posts can negatively impact your profile and visibility, potentially hurting your brand reputation and engagement. LinkedIn's algorithm favors profiles with consistent activity and engagement, and deleting posts can disrupt this pattern, reducing your reach and engagement.

Here's why deleting posts can be detrimental:

Reduced Visibility:Deleting posts removes content from your LinkedIn page, potentially hindering its visibility to your network and wider audience.

Lower Engagement:Deleted posts lose engagement metrics like likes, comments, and shares, which can negatively impact your overall engagement rate.

Perceived Inactivity:A profile with a high number of deleted posts can appear inactive or inconsistent, potentially damaging your credibility.

Algorithm Disruption:LinkedIn's algorithm favors profiles with a history of engaging and relevant content. Deleting posts can disrupt this pattern and reduce your visibility.

01:48:47 Kevin Kurgansky iPhone: What’s the pro of these 2 then? Do they allow you to access a wider base of research to aggregate stuff? Is there value in using it to do the search and then moving into chat gpt after you’ve generated and want to save or what’s the best way and form to use them together? Or is there no value or use to Poe / you.com? @Leandra

01:49:29 Leandra: Replying to "Michael, have you or..."

They have text to image, text to video, text to voice, so you can play around with a lot, but you are also limited because you’re not using them directly.
