Lee Child has sold 200M+ books and is the author of the Jack Reacher series.

What you may not know is that he didn't write his first book until he lost his job at age 40 and was broke.

When he told his dad his plans, the response was doubt:

Child explains his method as taking two steps forward and one step back every day.

He starts the day by:

  • Reading what he wrote the previous day aloud

  • Then editing it

Then he writes the next section.

In so doing, Child estimates that he goes through 100 drafts on each book:

“So that at the end of my first draft, you could easily think of it as, that's it. One draft. But, it's actually effectively the 100th draft because every day I've churned through it perfecting it.”
