Class Overview
Transform Your Ideas Into Content with AI Journaling
What if you could turn every fleeting thought, every casual conversation, and every half-formed idea into polished content that builds your thought leadership? In Class #3 of AI Thought Leader School, I introduced a revolutionary approach that does exactly that—using AI as your thinking partner to capture, develop, and refine the ideas already in your head.
On a bigger picture level, we’re creating a system that knows you, understands your frameworks, and helps you see connections you might miss. When participants started using these methods live in class, the breakthroughs were immediate. One person discovered they'd been approaching their expertise from the opposite angle than traditional methods. Another realized their scattered ideas actually formed a coherent framework they hadn't recognized.
During the class, we also covered:
Explored the "Spark" framework for structured AI conversations
Built custom Claude projects optimized for thought development
Created reticular activation systems for extracting key insights
Demonstrated live AI journaling using voice features
Developed workflows from raw thoughts to polished drafts
Practiced the infinite prompting technique for deeper thinking
Analyzed participant case studies and breakthrough moments
Mapped categories of data worth capturing systematically
Designed custom prompts for personalized content creation
Discovered emergent patterns in our own thinking processes
Why This Matters Now
We're at an inflection point where AI can amplify human creativity rather than replace it. The challenge isn't accessing information—it's organizing and developing the unique insights already within us. Most thought leaders have brilliant ideas trapped in their heads, scattered across conversations, or buried in notes they never revisit.
The methods we explored in this class solve that problem by creating a systematic approach to thought capture and development. When you build a reticular activation system, you're essentially teaching AI to think like you—to notice the patterns, connections, and insights that matter most to your work.
The broader implications extend beyond content creation. As AI becomes more sophisticated, the ability to co-evolve with these systems—to develop workflows that enhance rather than diminish our thinking—becomes a core competitive advantage. The participants who master these approaches won't just create more content; they'll develop more nuanced, original perspectives that no AI alone could generate.

Introduction and Infinite Prompting Review (0:01 - 6:09)
Michael Simmons opens Class 3 of the AI Thought Leader School by reviewing infinite prompting concepts from previous classes. Bonnie shares her sophisticated approach to training Claude for editing by showing before-and-after examples to help AI learn her editing patterns. She demonstrates using the infinite prompt to refine AI editing capabilities, creating author-specific prompts that capture unique editing needs. The discussion highlights how AI can identify editing patterns that humans might miss, though Claude's lack of persistent memory creates challenges compared to ChatGPT.
AI Fill-In Prompt and Writing Partnership (6:10 - 14:31)
The class explores Michael's AI fill-in syntax system for seamless writing collaboration. This approach uses custom tags like "AI fill in transition" or "AI fill in 3rd bullet" to mark areas where AI should contribute content. The system provides three alternative suggestions with rationale, helping writers maintain quality while reducing friction. Michael demonstrates how this becomes a natural writing partnership, similar to editorial symbols like "TK" (to come), but more interactive. Jay introduces the concept of "emergent prompting" for extracting key insights from coaching transcripts.
Emergent Prompting and Reticular Activation Systems (14:32 - 26:49)
Jay Twining introduces "emergent prompting" - a method for analyzing transcripts against coaching frameworks to identify when core ideas are referenced. This leads to discussion of reticular activation systems for data extraction. Michael creates a comprehensive framework for organizing different types of data: client pain points, intellectual property, content opportunities, and strategic information. The conversation demonstrates real-time collaborative thinking, with Michael updating prompts based on participant insights. The concept of writing for both human audiences and future AI systems emerges as a key principle.
Idea Development Workshop (26:50 - 36:32)
Michael guides participants through identifying their most alive ideas for development. The process involves collecting related data sources including research, drafts, voice notes, and transcripts. This exercise demonstrates the fundamental decision-making process of choosing which ideas to develop and in what order. Participants work on organizing their idea databases while learning about Claude's project system for paid subscribers. The workshop emphasizes that the first step is always collecting and organizing ideas before moving to development.
Setting Up Claude Projects for AI Journaling (36:33 - 47:25)
The class transitions to hands-on setup of Claude Pro projects for AI journaling. Michael explains the benefits of Claude's project system over ChatGPT for mobile voice journaling, emphasizing better accessibility and project integration. Participants learn to create projects, add custom instructions, and upload relevant context. The setup process includes downloading the Claude mobile app and understanding how projects maintain context across conversations. Michael addresses various technical questions and provides alternatives for different device limitations.
SPARK Journaling Framework Introduction (47:26 - 54:40)
Michael introduces the SPARK framework for AI journaling: Story, Point, broader connection, Reflect on deeper meaning, and Keep actionable takeaways. This structured approach helps transform conversations into content while maintaining personal growth benefits. Claude's interface displays the SPARK framework clearly, making it easy to follow. The system allows for both structured journaling using the framework or free-form conversation. Michael demonstrates voice recording options and explains how AI journaling differs from traditional journaling by creating interactive conversations that can generate article content.
Troubleshooting and AI Journal Benefits (54:41 - 01:03:04)
Una and John receive detailed guidance on project setup and understanding the meta-purpose of AI journaling. Michael clarifies that the system serves multiple goals: experiencing Claude voice, learning project management, and developing AI journaling skills. For users without compatible phones, voice notes can be recorded separately and uploaded later. The discussion emphasizes how AI journaling transforms one-way reflection into interactive conversation, helping extract ideas from heads into shareable content. John grasps the concept of creating a searchable library of ideas that reveals patterns and blind spots.
Live AI Journaling Experiences (01:03:05 - 01:17:23)
Participants share their real-time AI journaling experiences. Daniel discovers that Claude can replicate leadership assessment results based solely on conversation history, introducing the concept of "AI evolved" rather than "AI first" approaches. Leandra explores perfectionism in music, with AI helping her discover new frameworks connecting perfectionism to accessibility. Bonnie finds AI reversing her approach to emotional tropes in fiction writing, providing fresh perspectives on established methods. Faith reflects on how AI conversations open multiple creative doorways, requiring mental adaptation to process vast new connections rapidly.
Meta-Learning and Douglas Engelbart Framework (01:17:24 - 01:22:36)
Michael shares his teaching philosophy based on Douglas Engelbart's framework of improving how we improve. He demonstrates thinking on multiple levels simultaneously: completing tasks (A), improving methods (B), and improving how we improve (C). This meta-cognitive approach applies to AI use, where users should consider not just immediate applications but how to enhance their AI collaboration skills. The discussion addresses potential risks of losing client connection through advanced AI use, while emphasizing the importance of continuous improvement in AI workflows.
Export Tools and Workflow Completion (01:22:37 - 01:26:29)
The class covers practical tools for exporting Claude conversations using browser extensions. Michael demonstrates the Claude Conversation Exporter for creating markdown files of valuable conversations, enabling cross-platform content sharing. Participants learn to use the create draft prompt for transforming conversations into articles, followed by revision and AI fill-in prompts for refinement. The workflow emphasizes getting one repetition of each tool to build muscle memory, with customizable artifact counts for different subscription levels.
Final Reflections and Key Takeaways (01:26:30 - 01:29:26)
Michael emphasizes measuring progress through small daily improvements rather than comparisons with others, acknowledging that AI's rapid pace can feel overwhelming. Participants share their key takeaways: reticular activation systems, the value of AI conversations for capturing thinking, journaling as multi-channel content creation, and neurological adaptation to AI collaboration. The session concludes with recognition of Jay's emergent prompting contribution and encouragement to explore AI journaling in daily routines like walking or doing dishes. The class ends with anticipation for the next human superintelligence session.

I'm stealing this
00:35:06 Leandra: I’d like to develop my ideas about the unnecessariness of creative perfectionism in music creation and performance.
00:35:09 Una Doyle: Business Coach (Double Your Profits): Gargh, just realised Claude is stuck with message limit on my article from 2 weeks ago with some tweaks I wanted to make. I’m new to Claude.
Do I need to export and re upload the artifacts when I start a new message or just reference them?
00:35:35 faythebuchanan: The redundancy of anxiety in the absence of physical danger.
00:35:38 Jonathan Hughes: Developing a blockbuster article on the use of orientation for nervous system regulation.
00:35:41 Kevin Whitcher: One sentence overview - (a real reverse given our context) - Life is really very simple. People just complicate the f*** out of it.
That’s what’s alive for me right now.
(Also, unfinished draft of origin story awaiting completion to relaunch my Substack)
00:35:46 Una Doyle: Business Coach (Double Your Profits): Yeah I am on a paid plan
00:35:48 Shannon: Deep dive on original thinking for healthcare professionals (nurses, nurse practitioners )

I’d love to see what you do with it in a coaching context, @Michael Glenn!
00:37:57 Michael Glenn: Replying to "Right now, I’m do..."
Everything I do is rooted in story so... I'm feeding this to GPT as we speak. Slightly modified of course:
Help me do a deep dive into designing the emotional experience of a story (starting with tropes and expectations, but also understanding a reader’s emotional needs that the story should answer... as well as anything else you think is relevant to my work and calling).
00:38:03 Bonnie J.: One of my biggest obstacles right now is that I have been working on paper for years re: journal, keeping notes, and I am way behind on transferring all those things into a digital format.
00:38:16 Jonathan Hughes: Has anyone uploaded their personality profiles? I'm thinking of doing this. MBTI, Enneagram etc. I think it could allow AI to give your own flavour in its responses.

That could be the basis of every newsletter you ever write and you'll never run out of content -- or satisfied readers
00:38:58 John Kelly: Replying to "Has anyone uploaded ..."
Yes - very enlightening - done in ChatGPT 'Projects'
00:39:03 Kevin Whitcher: In an uploaded text file or pdf, can ChatGPT distinguish between text colours? I leave certain sections to be refined in red text
00:39:20 Vikram K: Replying to "Has anyone uploade..."
I have asked AI to be assertive and critical if need be, as i found its responses too soft.
00:39:43 Shannon: Replying to "Has anyone uploaded ..."

@Michael Glenn - Thanks for the vote of confidence!
00:39:51 Bonnie J.: Replying to "Has anyone uploaded ..."
I have done this with my Clifton/Gallup Strengths profile and had some really helpful conversatiions both in general, and about specific projects where I was stuck and asked it to use my Strengths to identify why I was stuck and what I might try to get unstuck or solve a particularly thorny problem.
00:40:51 Michael Simmons: https://claude.ai/projects/create

00:46:45 Kevin Whitcher: “This application requires IOS 17.0 in order to download and use this application”
Time to get a new phone then! (On iPhone 8)
00:46:57 Jay Twining: Claude just helped me define the concept we were discussing earlier:
Emergent prompts: Create a framework for unique exploration that adapts to each user's context and builds over time
I'm particularly intrigued by your phrase "similar but unique experience." That suggests these prompts have some kind of stable attractor - a consistent pattern or quality - while still allowing for genuine individual variation.
00:47:02 Una Doyle: Business Coach (Double Your Profits): Oh no, I’ve an old phone too
00:47:16 Leandra: Has the quality of Claude transcripts improved? In the past, I’ve found the transcription of Claude’s recording to be suboptimal

Not sure. Claude 4 just came out a few weeks ago, so I would recommend retesting. I’d be curious what you find.
00:50:08 Jay Twining: Already loving this @Michael Simmons
I'm about 4 or 5 conversation pieces into the journal and the clarity is exactly what I would expect :)
00:50:25 Una Doyle: Business Coach (Double Your Profits): Apologies - I’m feeling a bit lost. Not sure if because I missed the beginning of the session…
00:50:37 Kevin Whitcher: It won’t even let me download Claude!

00:54:31 Karen Zanetti: Replying to "Oh no, I’ve an old p..."
Thanks for your question. I've missed some sessions and am with you in the forest of the lost:-)
00:56:43 Michael Glenn: I tried both and can confirm: Claude voice chat on mobile is preferable to GPT
00:57:31 Daniel Montgomery: Loving this, I put a Polarity Profile I’ve Developed call Navigator in this Project and this was the response: The implications are profound: Traditional expertise is about pattern recognition and application.
What this means practically: You're not trying to "get good" at Navigator OS - you're trying to get good at co-evolving with it. The framework notices what works, what doesn't, what new tensions emerge, and reshapes itself accordingly. Meanwhile, you're learning to partner with that reshaping process.
The strange loop: As you apply Navigator OS to leadership situations, it's simultaneously learning about leadership andabout how frameworks should work. Each application teaches it something about its own structure.
This suggests a new category of thinking tool: Not just "AI-assisted" but "AI-co-evolved." The tool and the user are both changing through their interaction.
00:59:03 Michael Glenn: I started my project by copy/pasting Michael's AI Blockbluster Class Prompts and typed, "Here is some information I want to know."
Next, I copy/pasted a very poor rough draft and said, "Here's a newsletter I've started and now I want to finish it."
And now Claude is walking me through the whole thing one step at a time. It's not elegant but it's getting me unstuck
00:59:37 Bonnie J.: That was amazing, I need another hour to talk to Claude. :) I’ve never used the voice function before.
01:00:00 Karen Zanetti: Replying to "Oh no, I’ve an old p..."
And John is with us:-) So I'm not the only one. Getting clarity now.
01:00:24 Michael Glenn: I talk in my sleep.... How do we train Claude to record those conversations 😂
01:00:30 Marcin Podolski: Hi Jay, your idea about RAS is awesome, but I missed it when discussed and not sure if I understand how it should be used. Could you explain we purpose of it in one or two sentences? Is it for understanding clients/customers perception much deeper and their problems or is RAS done for us as a filter to creating content etc.?
01:03:04 Michael Glenn: I've created a /journal prompt in GPT where all I have to do is type that word -- /journal
Followed by a summary of what I journaled that morning by hand... and GPT generated Insights, key takeaway, theme, and emotions.
And that goes in a Notion database with all my /journal entries so that as it grows, I can draw on all that data to write social media posts and my newsletter and have it still be ME
01:03:20 Jay Twining: Replying to "Already loving this ..."
Sure. If I have a second brain and some thought / prompt leadership, I can create a prompt to go through my transcripts to identify reinforcement sentences or explanations or data points to better

Teach
Refine
my ideas and continue to build a lexicon around my thought leadership supported by AI in a way where I explain to different parties the same concepts.

01:11:18 Leandra: “Absorbing the potential” feels appropriate for each class!
01:11:43 Michael Glenn: We're evolving WITH the ai
01:13:29 Bonnie J.: It seems like with Claude, to have continuity over a longer conversation, it might be helpful to extract insights from each conversation and start collecting them in a Project Knowledge document for future chats.

That's too cumbersome for me, that's why I finally moved to GPT
01:14:06 Shannon: It’s the methods of pulling out the vast amounts of info we all possess and learning to work with these technologies to “co-evolve”

Absolutely!
01:15:11 Michael Glenn: @faythebuchanan Use both for different needs
01:15:14 Daniel Montgomery: @faythebuchanan It’s like your whole system is working to keep up … not just your mind trying to process, but your body feeling the pace, your intuition sensing something fundamentally different is happening. Nice Somatic, social experiment and we’re all being tested

Good point, I still primarily use Chat, but will try Claude.
01:16:39 Kevin Whitcher: Just a request Michael - if we are going to need particular resources for a live class, prep us 24 hours before - “It would be helpful if you could have (whatever) ready for the class”
01:16:45 Don S: This discussion highlights the value of “improving how we improve.” Thank you.
01:16:51 Michael Glenn: One of the best prompts: "What am I missing?"
01:18:58 faythebuchanan: Is there a hazard that we might lose the ability to speak the language of our clients who have not gone through this process?
01:19:07 Shannon: This resonates -being able to zoom in & zoom out at the same time
01:19:08 Kevin Whitcher: No - the resources that we need to bring to the party! Such as what we uploaded to Claude today
01:19:31 Bill Craddock: Is Douglas Englehart the creator of the A B C model you just discussed?
